Cups

When my mom emailed me the music video below, I'd yet to see the movie - Pitch Perfect - by which it was inspired. I actually almost turned the video off - Anna Kendrick spends the entire first minute making biscuits in a run-down diner kitchen - but decided to press on figuring that my mom wouldn't have taken the time to figure out how to email me a video if the video weren't worth watching.

As soon as I finished the video I called the kids in from the backyard and the three of us watched it again, and again, and again. When I showed it to Tom that evening he pointed out the impressive fact that the actual "cups" portion of the video was filmed almost entirely in one shot, which led to me loving the video even more.

That evening I opened YouTube to download a couple of videos of Will and Hallie and YouTube "suggested" this video for me:

Anna Kendrick's ability to sing - and sing well (turns out she's had quite the Broadway career alongside her success in films) - and rock the cups at the same time left me temporarily mesmerized.

My friends and I used to play a drinking version of "the Cups Game" in college (as part of the last move in the routine, players pass their cups to the person on their right; then players begin the routine again using the cup that was just placed in front of them by the person on their left), and I was pleased to discover that I still remembered how to play. I was also pleased that Will wanted to learn (the routine, not the drinking game), and that after A LOT of practice, he finally did it.

It takes him a couple of tries to get it right on the video.

Hallie, on the other hand, isn't quite ready to learn the routine or the game and has made up for this by learning all of the words to the song. Last week she sang the refrain...

When I'm gone, when I'm gaw-aw-aw-aw-awn.
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone.
You're gonna miss me by my hair,

You're gonna miss me everywhere, oh,
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone.

...27 times in a row without stopping.

I think it's time for an after-bedtime round of the Cups Game...the drinking version.

  2. maybe we need to step up the whole family's cups game so we can go on the road challenging other families in bars around the country.
