High Five for Friday (8.12.16)

1. I LOVE absolutely everything about the Olympics. The elite athletic competitions, the national pride, the powerful stories about overcoming adversity, the emotional medal ceremonies...even the heart-warming commercials. I turn on the television as soon as I come out of my bedroom every morning, and leave it on - switching back and forth between the five or six NBC-affiliate channels broadcasting the Games - throughout the day. Will feels the same way about the Olympics as I do, so these last seven days have offered quite a bit of bonding time for me and my boy. (Here are a few of my favorite Olympic moments!)

2. More on this in a separate post - because heaven knows they deserve more than a blurb - but OH, the Dixie Chicks. I saw them in concert on Saturday night, and while it was undoubtedly one of the hottest evenings of my life, it was also one of the best.

3. One of Will's best friends moved away - he and his family are going on a mission trip for a year or two - this week. While saying goodbye was tough, the boys look forward to staying connected over email...which means I am suddenly old enough to have a child who is old enough to have an email address. I choose not to dwell on that fact, however, in favor of remembering how happy Will looked as he set up his first email account.

4. After a great deal of time and money spent, Will and Hallie's rapidly growing and now gigantic feet will be covered on the first day of school, at dance lessons, and at soccer practice. Will went from a size three to a four-and-a-half in all of his shoes, and Hallie went from a size 13 to a THREE in her jazz shoes. (Hallie hadn't been dancing in her jazz shoes since early June, so it's not as though I was forcing her to suffer.)

5. I try not to shy away from sharing real life...even when real life looks and feels messy. To this end, I think it's important to mention here that big picture-wise, this week was pretty crappy. (More in a future post, once I get a handle on everything.) But as a result, family members, friends, and even acquaintances extended to us a tremendous amount of kindness and grace.

And some brought wine and chocolate, so lots of high fives all around.
