Before we bought our house it sat vacant for nearly a year. During those 11 months, the bushes in the backyard (and the front yard and the side yard) grew and grew and grew until they looked like they belonged in a jungle rather than a tidy neighborhood. One particular bush cruised past the window in our breakfast nook, ripping multiple holes in the screen on its way up. We discovered the rips when we moved in and trimmed all of the bushes back, but because we never open that particular window, we didn't bother to replace the screen.
It turns out that the holes in the screen are the perfect size for lizards to crawl through, and they do so often. During the late spring, summer, and early fall months, lizards take naps and go exploring in between the screen and the storm window. I don't like enjoy their presence, but I let the little lizards do their thing because it's cheaper than replacing the screen.
But then last week, right before we left on vacation, I came home to find
two lizards engaged in what can best be described as "adult lizard behavior".

I can't even look at this picture without feeling sick to my stomach. |
The male lizard and his lady lizard friend remained in this tightly intertwined and positively unsettling (I'd go so far to describe what I witnessed as "stomach-churning") position for nearly 20 minutes, which was 19 minutes longer than I needed to take a picture and therefore 19 minutes too long.
As if I didn't find lizards repulsive enough already.
