It's Not Too Late!

A little less than a year ago I wrote about my family's experience with The Big Event, Texas A&M University's annual student-run community service project. To summarize, I was impressed, primarily, with how well the event was organized, how polite and sociable all of the students with whom we interacted were (from start to finish I spoke with one student on the phone, met with two students at my kitchen table, and welcomed five students into our home on the day of the event), and how hard the students worked. I also loved how interested both Will and Hallie were in the whole shebang; the presence of the students prompted lots of discussion about college, volunteering, teamwork, and giving back to and improving our community.

I bring all this up because The Big Event 2013 is less than two months away (Saturday, March 23rd), and The Big Event Committee is still accepting job applications.  (In 2012, more than 17,500 students participated, so as I'm sure you can imagine, LOTS of jobs are needed to keep all of those fantastic students busy.)  Our experience was positive enough that I'd like to share with you how to participate, should you be interested in becoming part of this tradition.

(To give you a point of reference as far as jobs are concerned, last year our students pulled out a bunch of dead bushes, trimmed the bushes we wanted to keep, and did some basic lawn clean-up. This year they're going to rake out and bag up the weeds and old mulch/woodchips in the beds surrounding our house and throughout our backyard landscaping and then spread fresh mulch/woodchips.)

If you have any questions about out participation in The Big Event, don't hesitate to ask!
