High Five for Friday (2.12.21)

One
We found out that Hallie will have to wear her boot (for her broken sesamoid bone) far longer than we originally thought/were told. Our second visit to sports medicine for this injury was fairly traumatic - for Hallie and for me - and left both of us in tears, Hallie TERRIFIED of what's to come, and me seeing red.

We get it. The stupid bone is broken and she has to wear a boot. We hate the boot. It's heavy and cumbersome. It makes her feel clumsy and unstable. It makes her knee and hips hurt. And perhaps worst of all, it (along with the stupid broken bone, of course) is preventing her from fully participating in the one activity that makes her feel strong and healthy, keeps at bay the other medical condition with which she struggles, lifts her spirits, makes her heart soar, and renews her faith in both herself and in God.

We get it. This isn't the end of the world. A few well-intentioned people have reminded us of this, and about how she'll be stronger for having weathered this experience, and about how now would be a great time to embrace a new passion. I know these things are true...intellectually. But mentally and emotionally? NOPE. Neither she nor I have reached the stage in the grieving process where we can handle that kind of conversation.

So the high five in all of this, if you look hard enough (and let's be honest, she and I have had to look VERY, VERY hard) is that she's not giving up. She taking notes when she can't dance (ballet and tap) and doing as much as she possibly can in her other classes (jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and company), she's still learning all of her recital dances and assisting in her two itty bitty dancer classes, and she's doing extra exercises at home. It's so unbelievably far from perfect, but she's trying, and I'm proud of her.

Related to high five #1...

One of the biggest "losses" for Hallie when she found out about the bone in her foot was knowing she would have to miss another dance performance. Night of Worship is one of our favorite evenings of the year, and the thought of having to sit out on that night - especially after missing her company's first performance of the year when we were quarantining back in early December - was almost too much. When Hallie's company director saw that Hallie could still move around in her boot, she worked with Hallie and the rest of the company to adapt Hallie's part in all four dances so she could still participate. The opportunity to take the stage with her friends last Friday night was the greatest gift this teacher could have given Hallie, and I will be forever grateful.

Also worth noting... Not one of the girls in Hallie's company scoffed or complained about Hallie participating, even though on occasion her involvement meant the dances looked different than what they had looked like prior to Hallie's injury. Instead, every single one of them cheered her on and made sure she still felt like part of their team.

There were plenty of moves Hallie couldn't do - leaps, complicated turns, jumps of any kind - so there were points in each dance when she (as they'd planned) moved off stage and waited in the wings until time for her to reenter the stage. I happened to notice, at one point when she was standing off to the side, watching her friends on stage, that she was smiling. She was still smiling. When the night was over, a dance mom friend sent me this text. "It takes a great deal of maturity and poise to dance injured and even more to step to the side with a genuine, joy-filled smile when she would rather be in the middle of the stage. There wasn't a moment that I watched her (and I watched her a lot) when she looked anything but beautiful, graceful, and happy."

Related to high five #2, Hallie asked for a knee rover for Christmas. It's come in handy.

Four
These two have been such a source of joy throughout the last two challenging weeks. Mila (Mila Penelope) and Zalina (Zeezee) are as delightful as kittens come, and we will miss them when we send them off to their forever home today.

These two LOVE to workout with me. It adds a layer of difficulty and entertainment that I'm definitely here for. (I didn't put them in any of these positions. As soon as I stop moving for even a few seconds, they climb on or burrow in.)

Five
I didn't find Super Bowl LV all that interesting. The commercials, the halftime show, the game itself...hardly any of it kept my attention and I spent most of the second half working on this blog post. We did, however, have delicious snacks (perfectly cooked chicken wings and fun charcuterie boards), lively in-house entertainment (Hallie performed the boot-friendly choreography she's been working on), and excellent couch cuddles.

Happy Friday, friends!

If you've made it to the end of this post, thank you for reading and thank you for letting me - on occasion - use this corner of the internet as my therapy.

La La (Insta)Land

Back in January, we visited a new pop-up photography venue called Instaland BCS. Designed with selfies in mind, Instaland invited guests (up to 10 at a time) to spend 20 minutes taking as many photos as their little hearts desired in front of six expertly designed and created backdrops.

We all had a blast - a whirlwind 20 minutes - trying something new, and this experience helped me appreciate even more deeply how hard small businesses are working to adapt to and stay afloat in these COVID times.

We were pleased to learn that the pop-up did well enough in January to extend its stay through at least February. New backdrops were revealed at the beginning of this month and we have our tickets to check them out this coming Friday...stay tuned for Instaland pics round two!

We bought our tickets with our bubble, so we - the nine of us along with the masked woman who runs Instaland - were the only ones in the space and we therefore felt comfortable taking off our masks for pictures. All guests, regardless of relation, bubble status, etc., are asked to keep their masks on when not actively taking pictures.

High Five for Friday (2.5.21)

One
After a 10-day trip to Michigan for work, Tom made it safely back to Texas last Saturday. We missed him, but he had an enjoyable and productive week-and-a-half (as well as a well-deserved, quiet weekend all to himself in a hotel - sounds like heaven to me) so we're all grateful for that.

Two
Another weekend, another soccer tournament. This one looked a lot different than last weekend's, in that Will played with the 8th graders from his team as well as the 8th graders from another Cavalry team. These boys know and play with each other often, but they don't compete together as a team often, so it took them a while to get the logistics of their game worked out.

US Soccer is organized by birth year. Will was born in 2006, so he plays on an 06 team. It wasn't an issue in years past, and it won't be an issue in future years, but this year, more than half of the 06 players - those born in January through August - are in high school, while the others - those born in September through December - are in middle school. This means that while the high school soccer season is underway, the 06 middle schoolers are without a full club team and occasionally have to combine with other teams in order to compete. Next year the 06 boys will all be in high school and the 07 boys will have to deal with the same issue.

Regardless of outcome, (almost) any weekend spent on the pitch is a good weekend. I love watching my boy play.

Three
I felt so grateful for the opportunity to spend Friday night and all of Saturday with just my boy (Hallie stayed overnight and in College Station with a friend in our bubble until Tom made it back to town to pick her up) and then to have had a quiet-ish Sunday morning at home while Tom covered Sunday 8am game.

Four
After nearly four weeks (though it felt much longer) without foster babies, we finally have kittens in our home again! We all so desperately needed the boost to our spirits, shift in focus, and sense of purpose they brought with them.

Sweet Zalina doesn't have a tail, not even a nub. It's
ridiculously adorable, and because of it, she bounces
like a bunny instead of jumping like a cat.

We only have these babies for two weeks, and then they're off to their forever home...in Minnesota!

Will can fall asleep anywhere. And when he does,
kittens ALWAYS find and cuddle up with him.

Hallie was THRILLED with Tux's 5th position.

Love, love, love watching him play all the sports.

Hallie could only make one of Will's basketball game
this season. She cheered so loudly (she even learned
what a rebound was and when to yell, "REBOUND!")
and wanted them to win so badly, and when she realized
they were going to lose, she started to cry. That moment
wasn't happy for her, but seeing how much she cared
about this game and brother made me so happy...

Happy weekend, friends!

Monthly Medley: January 2021

Reading
Earlier this month I devoured The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin. I used to read her novels as soon as they became available at our public library, but in recent years I'd drifted away from her style of writing. This particular novel of Giffin's, however, had a twist I hadn't seen from her before, so I decided to give it a try. In the end, I'd call this book a winner: engaging and intriguing from the first page to the last, with a satisfying ending.

On the occasional early evening at home, I have been reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate to Hallie. I'm a little ashamed to admit...I have never liked reading chapter books to my kids. I enjoy reading picture books to them, but when it comes to reading chapter books, I prefer to skim, as that's how I read to myself. I cruise past "he said" and "she explained" and sometimes even unnecessarily (to me) long descriptions, and not being able to do this when I read out loud is incredibly frustrating. That said, I LOVED reading this book to Hallie and she LOVED listening to it. I think my shift in mindset had to do with how the book is written - the text is clean and easy, the story is simple and straightforward without any "fluff", and there are fewer than average words on most pages - but whatever the case, I'm grateful Hallie and I found a chapter book we could share and enjoy together. And now we're on to the movie!

Watching
On New Year's Eve we watched and loved Disney's live action Mulan. (Note: when the movie first came out you had to purchase it for $29.99 through a Disney+ subscription, but that is no longer the case.) The film was visually beautiful with bright, vibrant colors; full of well-crafted and -executed action sequences; and perhaps most importantly, a powerful story about female-led heroism and bravery. Definitely a win for all four Ferri!

As Hallie and I searched for our next sitcom, I remembered one I'd started years ago and of which I'd only made it through only a couple of episodes. We started One Day at a Time, a sitcom (apparently based on a sitcom of the same from the from the 1970s) about a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles, and were quickly reeled in; we finished the three seasons on Netflix in record time, and eventually were able to watch the fourth and final season (all but episode #1) on CBS online. This program dealt with a lot of heavy topics - mental illness, homophobia, racism, and mental illness - in a way that felt age-appropriate for a nearly 12yo and prompted a number of important conversations between Hallie and me. I desperately wish this show would have been renewed for additional seasons...
Tux enjoyed (?) One Day at a Time as well.

After Will and I finished The Mentalist, we needed a new show to watch together. I remembered one (apparently remembering television shows I watched ages ago was this month's theme) Tom and I watched when it first came out called Lie to Me. I can't consciously recall the specifics of any plot lines or endings, so it hasn't felt like rewatching a show; instead, it feels like watching a new show that I somehow manage to "call" the ending of more frequently that I should. I think Will's impressed. (Parents of teenagers will know that I am OF COURSE kidding when I say that Will's impressed with anything I have ever done, am currently doing, or will ever do.)

Tom and I are in search of a new "grown up" show. We tried the old Twin Peaks, but it put me to sleep twice, and we're also trying out The Mayor with Ted Danson. I'll keep you posted on that one!

Listening To
At this point, most of you have probably heard this song (a cover of Memories by Maroon 5) by One Voice Children's Choir. Hallie and I adore it (I only cry about half the time when I listen to it/watch the video), which let to us traveling FAR down the rabbit hole that is the group's YouTube channel. This group makes me miss singing in a choir, and excites Hallie about *hopefully* being in a choir next year.

Some of our other favorites include Better When I'm Dancing, True Colors, See You AgainBeliever, and This is Me.

Following
  • Have you seen videos of bakers going through the complicated process of icing and decorating sugar cookies? I find this process mesmerizing to watch. I know there are quite a few bakers who film and post these videos, but my current favorite is The Graceful Baker (@the.graceful.baker). She lives/works in NYC so it's unlikely I'll ever eat any of her cookies, but I do enjoy watching her make them pretty!
  • I have followed Young House Love (@younghouselove) - first their blog, then their books and products, and then their podcast (which, sadly, has been on hiatus for most of the pandemic because their young kids are at home attending school virtually) - for close to a decade, and they have remained one of my favorite Instagram follows for...well, however long I've been on Instagram. Their focus since the beginning has been home projects, and while over the years they've "grown" and tackled bigger, more complicated renovations, they still focus on the little things that make a house a place everyone can feel comfortable and call home.

Wearing
Every once in a while we have chilly or even cold mornings here in Texas. And because I head out for my daily walk between 6:30am and 7am, when it's chilly or cold outside I have to dress in light layers so I'll feel moderately comfortable both at the beginning of my walk, when my body is cold and stiff after not moving all night, and also at the end of my walk, when I've been exercising for nearly an hour. My problems related to topic are twofold. First, I no longer own light layers. I sold or donated many of them shortly after moving here, and those I kept wore out and were never replaced. Second, I'm really picky about this kind of clothing. I need these pieces to be warm but also moisture-wicking, and I want them to be fitted; interestingly, fitted long-sleeved workout tops are difficult to come by these days, as fitted is apparently out of style.

After listening to me talk about my problems for a few days straight back in December, my mom ordered me two of her favorite light layering shirts from the company Cuddl Duds. After just one wear, I raved about them to my mom...so she sent me four more...and then she bought me two more. So in the span of a month I went from zero good light layers to eight good light layers. And now that I've tried Cuddl Duds, I'll never go back to anything else - these shirts are amazing, and I highly recommend them for outdoor exercise, extra warmth while sitting at soccer tournaments or outdoor dance performances, and even every day wear.

You can find these Cuddl Duds shirts on the Cuddl Duds website, but they're almost always cheaper on Amazon, at Kohl's, and on Zulily from time to time as well.

I strongly dislike selfies, so I'm not posting a picture of me in one of these shirts. And since they don't look very good when photographed spread out on the floor, I'm just sharing links. First, here's the link to my favorite of the Cuddl Duds shirts - the Software Crewneck Top - on the Kohl's website. I have it in black, gray, ivory, pale pink, black and gray cheetah print, and black and red buffalo print. I also have the Climatesmart Crewneck Top in a dark blueish green and maroon.

Trying/Using
An influencer I follow recently talked about a new kind of hair elastic, but the brand she liked cost more than I was willing to pay for something of which we lose, on average, one a day. This version costs considerably less but still does an amazing job of keeping my hair pulled back but not damaging or breaking any of the strands. I also think these elastics create less of a crease, so if I pull my hair back to workout and then don't want to wash and dry post-workout, I can more easily and quickly revitalize my hair for the day.

Eating/Drinking
  • This Creamy, Lemony Chicken and Potato Soup was easy, healthy, and delicious. I followed the crockpot instructions and heavy whipping cream instead of mascarpone.
  • I don't like baking with yeast - it's too finicky - so I'm always on the lookout for bread recipes that taste like yeast bread but don't actually require that ingredient. This Honey Oat Quick Bread is lighter and fluffier that many yeast-free breads, and tasted like a dream...especially when served with the above-mentioned soup!
  • I made this Coffee-Toffee Crunch Cake (a two-layer version, rather than a three-layer version) for a friend's birthday, and it went over extremely well. I didn't have instant coffee, so in both cases where instant coffee was to be dissolved in liquid, I used strongly brewed coffee.
  • Hallie made these Spritz Cookies all by herself - fun, easy, and tasty!

  • I know NYE technically falls in December, but my NYE recipes are ending up in January instead of December's Monthly Medley. First up, Texas Caviar. Every recipe I found differed slightly from the others, so I used this recipe and modified it slightly based on what the other recipes called for ingredient-wise. I used one instead of two cans of black eyed peas, one instead of two cups of corn, left out the cilantro, and added a tablespoon of sugar to the dressing. The end result was perfect!
  • To go along with my Texas Caviar, I made this Slow Cooker Spinach Artichoke Dip. You really can't go wrong with spinach artichoke dip (spinach, artichokes, and lots of different kinds of cheese), but this one was particularly smooth and creamy.
  • Next up, these Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms. I used green onion instead of white or yellow onion, but other than that I followed the recipe exactly. These were devoured incredibly quickly, and are on the menu again, this time for Super Bowl Sunday!
  • Last but certainly not least, Hallie and I made this Gone to Heaven Chocolate Pie, which was - as I expected it to be - heavenly.
I let Hallie spread the whipped
cream and place the chocolate chips.

Feeling Good About

On to February, friends!
