Monthly Medley: October 2024

Writing

I haven't shared anything in this category for quite a while, but recently I wrote about writing and thought it made sense to share that post here.

Reading

I spent 80% of October reading more than 200 pages of the novel Come & Get It, by Kiley Reid. Someone I follow online - whose taste in books usually aligns closely with mine - recommended this novel, and while I gave it my very best effort, on page 205 I finally put the book down on my nightstand for good. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't for me...and I wish I'd made that decision a little earlier so I'd have a different recommendation to share with you this month.

Watching

I know it's not really any different than having an entire season of episodes available on Netflix or Hulu, but having a DVR queue full of recorded shows makes me incredibly happy. New to my queue this year are High PotentialMatlock, and Doctor Odyssey, and I'm trying to decide if I like Reba McIntire and Melissa Peterman enough to power through my strong dislike of the other main character on Happy's Place.

I also watched Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, and while it was extremely disturbing, it also kept me intrigued and at times even riveted. What a bizarre story...

Listening To

I started season 11 of The Binge (the season is called, Denise Didn't Come Home), and was immediately hooked. After finishing episode three, however, my intrigue turned to disappointment when I discovered that only those three episodes had (at the time) been released to non-subscribers. While I waited for the rest of the season to drop (s...l...o...w...l...y), I went backwards and listened to season nine, called My Friend, the Serial Killer, about a journalist who discovered weeks afterwards that he'd hitchhiked a ride with a confessed murderer.

I'm ready to start listening to Christmas music next...anyone else?

Following

I've been following Cecilia Blomdahl for quite a while, but the time change makes now feel like the right time to share her. 😉 Cecilia, who posts on Instagram as @sejsejiija, lives on Svalbard, an remote island close to the North Pole. At the end of October, the sun sets and doesn't rise again until the middle of October, and between November 14th and January 29th, Svalbard remains in complete darkness, a period of time known as the Polar Night. (The reverse - a period of time during which the sun never sets - also occurs; it lasts from April 19th to August 23rd and is called the Midnight Sun.) I find the Polar Night fascinating, and would love to experience it someday.

Trying/Using

Plié broke my favorite fall nail polish. It was a rough night, first cleaning shimmery orange nail polish out of every crevice and off of ever surface in our bathroom, and then realizing I couldn't replace this beloved bottle because the color had been discontinued. My search for a replacement led me to Lava by Olive and June, and while it doesn't have the slight shimmer I loved, it's still a very pretty autumnal color!

Wearing

Two months back I shared a pair of jeans I'd recently bought. I mentioned that I thought I liked them, but just wasn't sure because they were a new-to-me style. Well, I wore said pair of jeans to an event attended by teenagers, and multiple of these teenagers told me my jeans were cool and looked good. So that afternoon I bought two more pair. Apparently I'm easily influenced by the younger generation... (I now have the light, medium, and black washes. Check them out - they're on sale!)

Eating/Drinking

The heating element in our oven went out, and while Tom knew how to replace it (he's tackled this repair before), it took a little while for the ordered part to arrive. While the oven was out of commission, I decided to try to make (almost) everything we wanted to eat in the air fryer, just for fun and to see how well it worked on different types of food. Here's the list, and each food's grade: chicken breasts (A-), hamburger patties (A-), miniature pizzas (B+), french fries (A), diced potatoes (B-), peppers (B), crescent rolls (B), cornbread (B), apple fritters (B), and chocolate chip cookies (B-). Everything was edible, so I'm calling that a huge win for the air fryer!

Smiling About

Cheers to October, friends!
