Catching up on a couple of weeks of high fives after dedicating last week to the birthday boy! If you missed his birthday posts, you can find them here: You Can Always Come Home and Grown, But Not Really.
One
Thank you to everyone who helped make Will's 18th birthday a success! He woke to a room full of balloons, enjoyed donuts for breakfast before school, indulged in donuts and additional birthday treats in English (ONE FOURTH of his English class shares an October 4th birthday, so they had a party), and nearly ended up in a sugar coma with cake in physics (another student in his physics class shares his birthday, and his teacher's birthday was two days prior).
After school he opened the first of his gifts - a new disc golf net - so he could spend time putting it together and then trying it out, and then we all went out for a leisurely sushi dinner. We spent the rest of the evening at home, opening presents, eating cake, playing mini disc golf, and playing video games. He has additional birthday celebrations coming - a disc golf extravaganza with Tom and another one with friends - but those will have to wait until his back is healed.
It feels so strange, being the parent of an adult child...in some ways nothing has changed, and in other ways, everything has changed. I still love that kid more than anything - that, most definitely, hasn't changed at all.
Two
After making their homecoming mums the week prior, Hallie and friends dressed up, took photos, went out to dinner, and then skipped the actual dance (one of four actually went to the dance and rejoined them after a couple of hours) in favor of starting their HOCO sleepover a little early.
Last fall they went to both high schools' dances, something they didn't feel like they needed to do again this year. So while they skipped this dance, they're planning to go to Hallie's high school's dance in a few weeks!
Three
Will was on the news back in July, and then last week Hallie had her turn! She was nervous, having never done anything like this before, but she did a great job publicizing Ballet Brazos' upcoming production of The Nutcracker.
Four
Over the course of the two weeks, Hallie auditioned for her high school's musical (which will be High School Musical 😂). On her application she requested she not be considered for any kind of lead - she just didn't feel she had the experience (as a sophomore and first-time musical cast member) or time (given her commitment to Nutcracker and because of her tough academic load) - so she was just hoping her monologue, song, and dance auditions went well enough to earn her a place in the ensemble. They did, and she’ll be a cheerleader come showtime!

Happiness Highlights
A sneak peak of (parts of) their Halloween costumes. |
Biking is just about the only physical activity Will has been cleared to do, so he has dusted his bike off and has been hitting the open road at least a couple of times a week. |
I have the cutest pup nephew. |
One of these days I'll make it to Ferris Fest, the fabulous fall festival my MIL and SIL throw annually outside of Lincoln, NE. |
My niece, River, partied a little too hard at the pumpkin patch. |
His current favorite thing to do is watch the fishies screensaver on our television. He always looks for the ones who swim off-screen. |
Will's physical therapist's office broadcasts a panda-cam on their lobby television and I'm always bummed when we get called back. |
She doesn't like it when I sit on the front porch without her. |
Waiting not-so-patiently for me to come inside. |
Hallie's culinary class is my favorite. These cinnamon sugar donut hole muffins were amazing. |
Every year my niece's dance studio picks a completely different theme for their dance photos. I love the eclectic hip hop theme they went with this year! |
She's so photogenic! |
Our new dance studio moved into its new location last week! |
He's such a handsome boy. |
Maybe he has a future in modeling? |
I LOVE that my nephew has reached the age of not smiling in sports pictures. (Apparently it was his idea not to smile in this photo, and I'd like to think he's copying Will's Lads pre-game photos.) |
Happy weekend, friends!
